Principles of Appropriate Use
Mount Royal College Faculty of Communication Studies values the principle of academic freedom and supports an open environment for the pursuit of scholarly inquiry. The contents of all unofficial web pages on Faculty of Communication Studies servers, however, must comply with Canada’s laws concerning privacy, copyright, defamation, hate propaganda, obscenity, and pornography. Web pages on Faculty of Communication servers should also adhere to existing Mount Royal College policies such as, but not limited to, the Student Code of Conduct, the Human Rights Policy, and Offensive/Discriminatory Materials Policy. Additionally, all radio and television broadcast material should comply with ethical guidelines explicit in the Code of Ethics of the Radio and Television News Directors Association of Canada (RTNDA).

As faculty, staff, and student web pages are not official communications of the Faculty of Communication Studies or Mount Royal College, logos may not be used on such pages. Additionally, unofficial pages must include the following statement: “This page does not necessarily reflect the views of the Faculty of Communication Studies or Mount Royal College.”

The Faculty of Communication Studies recognizes the legitimate right of students, faculty and staff to pursue and investigate often controversial topics as part of their course of studies or instruction. Indeed, such pursuit is viewed by the Faculty as a necessary part of many courses within the Faculty of Communication Studies. However, content that contravenes Canada’s laws concerning privacy, copyright, defamation, hate propaganda, obscenity, and pornography, will not be tolerated.

Accessibility
In compliance with the Alberta Human Rights Act and MRC policies on human rights and special needs, all electronic publications will strive to be accessible to people with disabilities.

Intellectual Property
Portfolio web pages are individual web pages that are maintained solely by students, staff, or faculty. The Faculty of Communication Studies is not responsible for portfolio pages but reserves the right to remove any page or link in violation of this policy. The content of portfolio web pages is the intellectual property of the author.

Policy Violations
In the event that there is concern regarding compliance with this policy, the page(s) in question will be removed from the web site, while a committee comprised of faculty and staff, decides whether or not to permanently remove the page(s). The committee will adjudicate the matter within one week of removal during which time a notice will be placed on the site.

Linking & Contact Information
Web pages may not link to any illegal material. Any links to other sites should be operational, kept to a minimum, and must open outside the Faculty of Communication Studies web site. It is also advisable to get permission from the web master of the site you wish to link to. Every web page must include contact information for the person who manages the pages content.
